The last factor is often carried out to shake the poor quality and sometimes misleading web sites from undeserved high search rankings. What is SEO and how is it different from SEM?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the work put into making a site Search Engine friendly and making it rank well on the Search Engines by using suitable keywords, meta tags and quality content that work together in harmony.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is where the web site is listed through a combination of free or natural listings on search engines and quality link sites and paid listings to direct traffic to the web site. There are a number of ways to do paid listings - Pay Per Click (PPC), Pay for Inclusion (PFI), Pay Per Impression (PPI).

Pay Per Click: This is often termed as a sponsored link. Essentially you pay each time a visitor clicks on one of these types of links. A popular Pay Per Click programme is the Google Adwords which lists sponsored listings above and beside its free listings as well as Google Adsense to display listings on subscribing web sites. Other methods you may have seen are advertising banners and pop-up windows for advertising.

Pay For Inclusion: Some sites will ask you to pay before they include the web site on their listings. In some cases, they rank listings based upon how much you pay for a particular listing and the category of the listing. These sites are more likely to be termed Directory Sites. Some examples of popular directories are Yahoo! and Yellow Pages. Pay For Inclusion may be combined with Pay Per Click or other paid listing methods because the operators of the site providing the listing manually check the quality of your link or you might pay for a particular position or area on the provider's site such as the top of major page. It needs to be noted that Pay For Inclusion doesn't always mean that you will achieve a high ranking quickly, just simply that you have a better chance of achieving some kind of listing.

Pay Per Impression: This is not a very popular method and is only used by large organisations with large advertising budgets. It works in a similar way to Pay Per Click but instead of paying each time your listing is clicked, you pay each time your listing is displayed on the advertiser's web site. If the site providing the advertising is extremely popular such as a News site, then your listing will be viewed more times and you pay accordingly. An example of this method was when Ford Motor Company launched their new model Explorer 4x4. They approached a globally recognised, high traffic web site and paid for their large listing to be displayed to every single viewer for a period of time. The budget for this was excessive but the tactic paid off.

Quality Link Sites: These are sites that have a high search engine ranking and provide a place for listings to web sites (often in the form of text or banner links). Quality Link Sites will sometimes place your listing on other sites through Pay For Inclusion methods. Examples of these types of sites are Online Shopping Malls that do not sell anything directly but display your listing, product or service for visitors to click and follow to your site. They will often provide some kind of tracking code to be attached to your web site so they can monitor the quality of your listings as well as provide a method of reporting (also known as ROI - Return On Investment). Care needs to be taken that the Link Site is of reputable standing and not a site that will spam other sites with your listings. Spamming of sites with unwelcomed listings will severly damage your search engine rankings or worse, cause you to be removed completely (black listed).

Reciprocal Links: These are links exchanged with other well ranking quality web sites in order to establish external links to your web site. They do not always generate high traffic but are helpful in establishing search engine rankings. The general rule is that a web site with lots of quality external links is likely to be ranked higher because it has a higher visible presence on the Internet. Again, care needs to be taken that links are exchanged only with quality sites to avoid spamming and black listing. Recipical links are usually free but may be restricted to lower ranking sites unless you achieve a certain ranking on Search Engines (otherwise known as a Page Ranking). Most recipical links sites prefer to link with sites that have a Page Ranking of 2 or higher.

Return On Investment (ROI): The results achieved through a linking campaign and reported through tracking code supplied by the advertising site. This is often the best method for Ecommerce web sites to guage their performance and value of the advertising on a particular site. The tracking code will usually record and report back to the advertising site the value of a particular sale associated with the click that was followed to your site. The cost of the number of clicks (if the listing was a paid listing) to date or over a period of time is then weighed against the total value of the sales from your web site and resulting in a percentage much in the same way as the effectiveness of traditional media such as newspaper advertising can be determined based upon how many enquiries it generates and how many of those enquiries become sales.
